About

Why this exists

The law shapes everyday life, but it is written for lawyers. In Plain Terms is a free library that explains it clearly and accurately, for law students, professionals and anyone who needs to understand where they stand.

How every page is made
  • Written from the Act, section or judgment itself, with a link to it.
  • Short sentences and everyday words. Legal terms are explained the first time they appear.
  • Checked before it goes live, and dated.
Keeping it up to date
  • Every page shows when it was last reviewed.
  • When a law changes, every page it touches is re-checked.
  • Each page keeps a short list of what changed and when.
What this site is notIn Plain Terms explains the law in general terms, so it can't cover the details of your own situation. For advice on that, it's best to speak to a lawyer. If cost is a concern, you may be eligible for free legal aid: you can call NALSA on 15100.
